“Xihu” (West Lake), praised by generations of poets, described by Marco Polo as "the most beautiful and elegant in the world,” serene and spellbinding in tranquility, is sheltered by low hills and surrounded by 10 well-marked scenic spots. Located in the environmentally-conscious provincial capital of Hangzhou, only 180km from Shanghai.
Helpful Advice
Spring and Fall are the best seasons to visit. Hangzhou itself is a picturesque city, one of the seven ancient capitals of China, and well-known for its efforts to reduce pollution, for example by supplying free bicycles inside the city center. Other nearby attractions include the Lingshan Caves and Linyin Mountains.
Tour Route
Xiaoshan Airport, just outside the city of Hangzhou, provides flight service to and from large and medium Chinese cities, Japan, Korea and other international destinations. Shuttle buses from the airport take 50 minutes. Five air-conditioned tourist trains run daily to and from Shanghai; others connect to many Chinese cities.
